Frequently Asked Questions
What if I change my mind after purchase?
You can return the product for a full or a partial refund. We have a generous returns policy.
How does the product achieve a long life time?
Most computer hardware lasts a long time. It’s the software that becomes outdated. Without continuous security updates, our data and safety are at risk. By stopping security updates, many companies force us to buy new devices every few years.
FreedomBox devices sold by us does not suffer these artificial limitations. We use FreedomBox software with Debian GNU/Linux as our underlying operating system. Debian (of which FreedomBox is a part) provides security updates for each of it’s major releases for at least 5 years.
After this, the device can further extend it’s life by upgrading to the next release (which happens roughly every two years). FreedomBox team works hard to deliver a simplified, bug-free upgrade experience. However, some apps you use may become unavailable or get replaced by other similar apps.
So, as long as you are keep upgrading to a newer releases, your device will be supported for a very long period of time.
If any of the hardware components such as power supply or a hard disk stops working, they can be replaced with off-the-shelf components sold by other vendors or by us.
When will NAS support be available?
When will the 2TB/8TB versions be available?
FreedomBox already has apps typically provided by NAS for media sharing. Samba app provide the ability to share folders and allow other computers to read/write to them. MiniDLNA apps can stream media to other devices at home such as TVs. Sharing app can make folders available over HTTP.
FreedomBox is in the process of adding capability to manage RAID disks and store app data to it. This support will be available in the first half of 2026. The 2TB/8TB versions of the hardware will be available for purchase as soon as this implementing this support is completed.
However, you don’t have to wait. You can now buy the 512GB version and later upgrade it to 2TB or 8TB version (or even higher capacity) by simply adding two identical hard disks. FreedomBox will provide the interface to configure the newly added drives as RAID and move the data of storage-related apps to these drives. A tutorial on how to achieve this will become available.
How is Sales Tax/VAT/GST calculated?
Sales tax is calculated based on the delivery address (to comply with your local tax code), our store address (in Washington, USA), the type of the product (some products don’t have sales tax), and the date of purchase (sometimes there are tax holidays). We use a third party service called Stripe Tax to perform these complex calculations.
Can I install another operating system?
The FreedomBox devices are general purpose computers. If you wish, you may install other operating systems either by removing FreedomBox+Debian or install it side-by-side. However, we can only provide support for FreedomBox.
